What Is Pepper Spray?
Pepper spray is a non-lethal self-defense tool designed to temporarily disrupt an attacker’s eyes, breathing, and coordination so the user can escape.
It is commonly chosen because it is:
- compact
- practical for everyday carry
- non-lethal
- easier to use than many other self-defense tools
- useful for people who do not want close physical confrontation
Pepper spray is best understood as an escape tool, not a confrontation tool.
How Pepper Spray Works
Pepper spray contains oleoresin capsicum, often called OC. When sprayed toward the face, it causes intense irritation that can lead to:
- involuntary eye closure
- burning sensation
- coughing
- breathing difficulty
- confusion and disorientation
This creates a short but important window to move away and get to safety.
